The Anchorage School District has designated certain dates on which significant events should not be scheduled out of respect for the cultural and religious traditions of school district families. This follows School Board Policy 350.2. Unfortunately, the state does not observe this calendar and continues to schedule on religious holidays. The dates are available at the following link:

Courage, Compassion and Cross-Cultural Communication is a conference that will take place all day Monday, Oct. 24 in the East and West Auditoriums. Fr. Michael Oleksa will be our keynote speaker that morning, talking about cross cultural communication basics. We'll also have Barb Jacobs from the Alaska Immigration Justice Project talking about skills in working with language interpreters, and Karen Ferguson from Catholic Social Services Refugee Assistance and Immigration Services giving a talk on "Refugees 101." In the afternoon we'll have several panel discussions, with speakers representing Hmong, Japanese, Polynesian, Islamic, Russian Orthodox, Hispanic, Alaska Native (Inupiat), Navajo, Military, and Gay/Lesbian communities. (There may be more, but this is what we have confirmed at this time).
